For each application to be described, outdoors thermal comfort may be described either for environments of deep shade (PMVSHADE) or open sun (PMVSUN), generally for summer, and winter travel planning, respectively
PMV stands for
"Predicted Mean Vote," and refers to a thermal comfort
scale ranging from "±3.0," with "0.0" (the midpoint)
corresponding to the neutral or ideal condition.
This thermal comfort scale is apparently independent of sex, age, race,
geographic location or seasonal comfort preferences (such as morning versus
evening or circadian rhythm).
In either case, we assume that: (1) individuals are dressed in light summer clothing, (2) their activity is sedentary (sitting), (3) it is midday and (4) there is no wind (that is, the air is still ó a worst case condition).
Tables of precipitation and snow depth provide additional information about the expected travel conditions.
