ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

T

his text benefits from the contributions of numerous works, organizations and individuals.

On one level, information available in essential reference works represents the bedrock foundation upon which this book is based. On another level, many organizations and individuals directed their special skills and talents to help bring this book to its current state. It is with sincere gratitude that I acknowledge this valuable information and personal assistance.

Essential Reference Works

This book draws on four essential services, namely:

  • Historical climate data, available from the International Station Meteorological Climate Summary CDROM, were essential for tabulating leisure thermal comfort and precipitation values.

  • Motivation for writing this book – as well as information to guide its writing – is due primarily to the work of Professor P.O. Fanger, Department of Energy Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (E-mail: fanger@et.dtu.dk).

  • Quarterly black globe temperature isotherm maps, prepared by Gulf Weather Corporation, enabled adjustment of thermal comfort estimates by accounting for the effect of sunshine.

  • Technical information available from the ASHRAE* Handbook of Fundamentals played an overall important role. In the sense that previously acknowledged contributions might represent bricks within a conceptual structure, the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals represents the mortar that binds these bricks together.

Other Contributions

Technical review and proofreading of another’s work does not imply approval or endorsement of the work nor even that all errors of omission or commission are extracted. I claim full responsibility and apologize for any residual errors.

I am indebted to the following individuals who are listed below in no special order:

  • Penny Hammer and Bill Carey, of SkyCanvas, Minneapolis, Minnesota, for their design of the front and back covers and all color artwork in between.

(E-mail: skycanvas@mn.rr.com.)

  • Mr. Robert Simons, of Cohort Software, for his isogram contour maps and meteorological station location map, made by using CoPlot (E-mail: info@cohort.com; Website address: www.cohort.com).

  • Mr. Steve Chamberlin, of Precision Proofing, Minneapolis, Minnesota, for his accommodating and steadfast proofreading support.

  • Hollie Jorgensen, Andrea Kuehn, and Kathy Bauer, librarians, for their helpful comments.

  • Wife, Marjorie, and daughter, Alison. After thirty-five years of teaching high school mathematics in addition to counseling and vocal music, Marjorie found time to assist me – with her patience, initial and final proofreading, suggestions and continued support. Likewise, Alison contributed her constructive computer graphics support throughout all preparatory work of this book.

  • My late mother, Muriel, in memoriam, for her love throughout the years. ■
